Universal Yarn’s Superwash Deluxe Bulky

When I received my Superwash Deluxe Bulky it was wound into a loose yarn ball, all ready to be knit up. Its really easy to use this yarn as a center pull ball, or to take the strand and knit from the outside as well.

Right away I started creating with the yarn. I’ve been absolutely obsessed with this coral color lately, and it fits right in with 2021 spring/summer fashion trends. My upcoming brand Purlwear features universal yarn in a couple of designs.

Let the Yarn Ideas Flow

I wanted to see how the yarn would hold up against a baby. *Rubbing hands together*

The first thing that I made was a baby cardigan, I used my free pattern mairzydoats.

I chose a baby cardigan because I knew it would get a lot of wear, and I would have to wash it often so I wanted to see how the yarn would stand up to heavy usage.

Baby Cardigan complete, I felt I needed to match, so I used some of the extra coral colored yarn to make myself a hat that’s absolutely on trend for spring.

You can Use this as knitting yarn and as yarn for crochet

The hat is a knitting and crochet combination project.

I’ve been finding that I have more hair these days and that I require a hat since I have not been able to get a haircut in almost a year… I’ve been wearing the same style hat for as long as I can remember but I wanted a fresh and new look for spring. I designed this brimmed bucket hat as a knit and crochet collaboration.

Well, I couldn’t stop there, I had to knit myself a sweater next. The chunky yarn was calling to me.

This Cardigan is another installment in the PurlWear spring capsule collection.

The idea behind this design was to make a cardigan that could easily go from a day look to a cozy cardi in the evening.

you can’t see in the photo but the cardigan has a rounded edge that looks like it would be a full length sweater from the back. but in the front the hemline allows you to show off your cute spring & summer tops

A yarn Necklace

I had another little bit of yarn left, and a burst of inspiration so I made this cute tassel Necklace. Making tassels is a great yarn craft to do with kids. I had a lot of fun with my older child practicing for our live yarn tassel tutorial.

Yarn+Tassel+Necklace

(Tune into my IG live on Tuesday to learn how to make tassels! )

I have a little yarn left (about 300 yards)  what do you think I should make?

Most of the the Bulky Deluxe Yarn is a Solid color. They do have some heathers, which are mostly solid with a little extra depth. which looks like some of the natural colors of the wool coming through in some of the plys.

How Much Chunky Yarn to make a …

I was able to make a hat (I had leftovers) with one skien.

A baby cardigan with two skeins

and an adult size cardigan with four skeins.

and I used the leftovers form my hat’s skein to make the Yarn Tassel necklace.

Expected Gauge:  on ball band : Yarn Needle Size US 10.5. 12 sts by 16 inches 4 inches in st st

My gauge:

blocked : 3.5 sts per inch

Unblocked: 4 sts per inch

I used size 8, and 7s which is standard for me because I have a loose knitting style.

Lace: The stitch definition on this yarn is lovely, and the 4 ply structure of the yarn makes the stitches pop.

I think an all over lace pattern could be really fun and larger than life. you’re not going to get that tiny delicate look because it’s a bulky yarn, but you could do a macro lace and have a lot of fun with that.

Cables:

Because the yarn is so solid, the cables really pop, the color choices as a solid yarn make cabling really effective as the defining feature in a garment. I’d love to see this yarn used in a classic aran sweater.

Stockinette Stitch:

ahh, the knit stitch, the basic structure of knitted fabric. lovely and practical in its simplicity. The stitch Definition of this yarn is very clear and defined, and the solid color is helpful in defining the stitches.

Does this yarn pass the superwash test?

IMG_0716.jpg

This yarn is a super wash yarn, so I made a couple of swatches and threw them into the wash on my most vicious of cycles.

From top to bottom

Hand Washed and Blocked

Machine Washed and Blocked

Machine washed and Machine Dried

Wash/ Care : This is a Super Wash Yarn

I say with absolute certainty that this yarn stands the test of both my washing machine and my dryer.

the only thing about the dryer is that, the way it dries is somewhat unpredictable, so the stitches don’t necessarily lay flat, which depending on the type of garment you are making might make a difference to you.

As a mother of 2 young, and active children, it’s very important to me to be able to throw their hand knit sweaters in the washing machine, and for convenience… I admittedly put them in the dryer too.

Does this yarn Pill? :

This Yarn is as hard wearing as it seems. My crawling baby wore this sweater every day for two weeks in order for me to test the pilling of this yarn, and there is not a pill in sight!

Drape :  I used this Yarn in A few projects varying in size. The smaller projects are super elastic, as expected from a wool, it snaps right back into place.

When I got to my larger projects while blocking my knitting it did elongate, I think because of sheer mass, next time I will choose to block with a steamer or spray bottle if i’m making a fitted, or big knitting project.

This is a Thick Yarn

What I would use this for. : This yarn lends itself really well to gift knitting. especially when you have to make some quick gifts! it comes ready to use and it’s a bulky weight so it knits up really quick. My favorite item that i’ve made is the knitted and crocheted bucket hat!

I’d also like to use it for some more outerwear, and some staple everyday sweaters because of the yarns super fluffy and has a dense fabric structure.

Why I would choose this yarn type specifically: This yarn is great for quick knits, The Yarn weight makes it really warm, and the yarn thickness adds to the aesthetic value. As far as trends go, I think the large bulky stitches are going to be hot and trending for cozy styles into 2021.

Applicable patterns : I tested this pattern out on Mairzy Doats. You could use it for any bulky sweater pattern like the snowflake obsidian. it’s a great yarn for patterns that are going to be an outer sweater, like a classic aran, or with all of those available colors, try a color work yoke sweater.

bernie sanders mittens, bernies mittens

Have you seen the Bernie Sanders mittens?

I’d be Surprised if you hadn’t! this past week Bernie’s Mittens have taken the internet by storm. It isn’t too often that Knitting goes viral, so, I had to make a knitting pattern!

And I released the hand knit mittens as an exclusive finished garment on purlwear.com

it just so happens that I used two colors of Universal Yarns Deluxe Bulky in the pattern.

How does the yarn feel : This yarn is instantly squishable, soft and durable.

How does the yarn work up: The yarn works up very evenly and shows great detail in the stitches.

Over all, the Density of the fabric is Thick, Fluffy and Dense. The stitch Definition is Very clear, secure and Stable.

the only thing I would do Differently is change my blocking style when working with larger garments, due to the weight of the fabric my garment definitely got bigger and if you’re making a large knitting project or fitted garment be careful as you block, maybe try blocking in sections because it is very heavy. you might even try blocking your knitting with a steamer or spray bottle.
